Austrian Museum Quality Seal

In 2016, the Roman City Carnuntum was awarded the Austrian Museum Quality Seal. This hallmark is bestowed upon institutions which set themselves apart from others by unrivalled means of museal presentation.

In the framework of the Austrian Museums’ Day 2016, the Roman City Carnuntum was accorded the renowned Austrian Museum Quality Seal. This hallmark is bestowed upon institutions by ICOM Austria and the Austrian  Museums’ Association which set themselves apart from others by unrivalled means of museal presentation.

Raising the level of awareness for sustainable and high-quality museum work belongs to one of the major objectives claimed by the Austrian Museum Quality Seal. In Austria, the term “museum“ is not protected juridically nor bound to any stipulations. Thus a set of standardized benchmarks as put forward by ICOM Austria and the Austrian  Museums’ Association is all the more important.

The museum work is based on the "Code of Ethics" of the International Museum Community ICOM. It includes a commitment by each institution and its staff to comply with the required guidelines and to implement them with diligence in the daily museum work with regard to the cultural heritage. The basis of the criteria catalog is the definition of the respective museum as a non-profit, permanent institution serving the society and its development, being open to the public and collecting, preserving, researching and mediating tangible evidence of human society and its environment for study, education and entertainment purposes.
