History & activities

The Friends of Carnuntum are one of Austria's oldest associations of this sort and an important stakeholder for all archaeological concerns in Carnuntum. Since their establishment in 1885, the main objective is to support archaeological research in Austria's largest historical cultivated landscape and make its results accessible to a broad public. The first excavations in Carnuntum were financed by the association thanks to private donations.

Long-term conservation of archaeological remains was and always will be an issue equally important to the Friends of Carnuntum.

Apart from scientific research, the foundation of the Museum Carnuntinum opened by Emperor Franz Joseph on 27 May 1904 ranges among the major achievements of the society once spearheaded by illustrious representatives of the imperial family, nobility, upper class members, science and economy.

Lectures, seminars, publications and close cooperations with institutions operating in similar fields keep members, professionals and ordinary persons interested in history and archaeology up to date with the latest developments and discoveries in and around Carnuntum.
