Roman Legacy – A project to strengthen the Roman heritage along the Danube Limes
August 1, 2025The three-year ROMAN LEGACY project aims to strengthen the Roman Danube Limes as a unifying cultural heritage in the Danube region and to anchor it by establishing an official cultural route. At the end of the project, this route will be submitted to the Council of Europe for certification. Building on the results of previous EU initiatives, a sustainable and thematically coherent network will be created that also integrates smaller and remote locations into the cultural area.
A central element of the project is the development of a digital presentation of the route and the promotion of slow tourism and ecotourism offerings. These approaches aim to preserve the cultural wealth of the region while actively involving the local population in the presentation and preservation of their heritage. Co-creative methods will strengthen cultural identity along the Danube Limes and present the Danube region as a historical link between various Roman provinces and Germanic tribes.
As part of the project, a unified brand is being developed that connects all Roman sites along the Danube and the Danube Limes. Close cooperation between local actors and international experts ensures the sustainable development and presentation of the region. The project relies on modern media, events, and innovative information offerings to make Roman heritage accessible to a wide audience.
In addition, ROMAN LEGACY is seen as an extension and deepening of earlier EU projects such as Living Danube Limes, Danube’s Archaeological eLandscapes, Archaeodanube, and Transdanube Travel Stories. The project builds on the best results of these initiatives and contributes to the sustainable development of the region by promoting cultural dialogue and transnational cooperation.
The creation of Roman Trails, hiking and cycling routes that focus on regional historical features, also strengthens ecological tourism. The aim is to make these routes accessible not only to tourists but also to the local population as valuable cultural resources.
The Roman city of Carnuntum, as a project partner, is proud to make a significant contribution to the development of this cultural route. Through our expertise and experience in presenting Roman heritage, we are actively involved in creating a unified interpretation and presentation strategy that brings the history of the Roman Danube Limes to life. We look forward to working with our partners to promote the unique history of the Danube region and preserve Roman heritage for future generations.
