30 Jahre erlebte Geschichte in Carnuntum

Since 2011, “the Gentes” have been bringing antiquity to life, making it tangible and accessible. From the early Roman Empire to late antiquity, they present history with passion, knowledge, and attention to detail—both military and civilian—for museums, events, and anyone who wishes to experience antiquity alongside us.

What sets them apart is certainly a particularly strong passion for civilian reenactment; while the Gentes Danubii do have military reenactments in their repertoire, they have a special eye for everyday life and the lives of “ordinary people,” which makes them especially welcome guests in Carnuntum, as this focus aligns closely with the current desire to learn more about daily life beyond the great battles.

Furthermore, the Gentes cover a very broad time period that extends well into late antiquity. The group is always looking for new members, and anyone interested is welcome to introduce themselves to the group this weekend.

LEGIO XV APOLLINARIS COHORS I is a Roman historical reenactment group dedicated to experimental history, which brings the “Old Austrian” Fifteenth Legion Apollinaris—stationed in Carnuntum (Petronell, Lower Austria)—back to life. With scientific guidance, the group faithfully recreates the life and battles of the Roman legionary infantry in the mid-1st century AD.

Since 1991, they have organized events at museums, excavation sites, and schools, and participate in major Roman festivals. The group also shares its expertise through lectures. In their performances, Legio XV strives to present as diverse and authentic a picture as possible of a Roman legion from the early Imperial period. Throughout their decades of work, they have maintained close contact with museums and scholars. As a result, their equipment is constantly being expanded and adapted to specific requirements through the archaeological experiments they conduct.

Exercitus Pannonia Superior - Legio XIII Gemina - Society for the Reenactment of Roman History in Austria

Based in Vienna, the association has been dedicated since 1991 to the reconstruction and reenactment of Roman antiquity, with a focus on the Roman military of the second half of the 1st century, the reenactment of provincial Roman life—particularly in the Noric-Pannonian cultural region—and various types of crafts.

To this end, they collaborate with archaeologists, historians, museums, and partner groups to ensure the most authentic reconstruction possible. Whenever possible, the group crafts much of its own equipment, as equipment construction is also part of the archaeological experiment.

In addition to events in Austria, Legio XIII is very active in German-speaking regions—Germany and Switzerland—and occasionally in France or Italy.

In addition to reenactments in cooperation with other groups, educating visitors is a key focus, and various educational methods are used to inspire people about Roman antiquity and to highlight numerous similarities—as well as, of course, significant differences—with our modern world.

The Cohors I Pannoniorum is a relatively new group on the Austrian reenactment scene. It was founded in 2025 and consists mainly of former and current cultural educators from the Roman city of Carnuntum. The group portrays an auxiliary cohort from the turn of the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, which was raised under Emperor Trajan and was also stationed in Carnuntum for a time.

In addition, the group portrays civilian life in the Canabae Legionis. Beyond striving for the most authentic representation possible, the Cohors aims to inspire people of all ages with a passion for Roman antiquity and to enable them to immerse themselves in this unique era, drawing on their professional expertise in teaching Roman history. To this end, regular training sessions, open camps, and activities are organized both in Carnuntum and elsewhere; the group also participates in festivals and is hired for film shoots and other events. Interested and enthusiastic individuals—even those without a background in cultural education—are always welcome to join the ranks of the Cohors at the Danube Limes.

The Ursi Aurei association from St. Pölten uses cultural education to portray various aspects of daily life through the use of equipment that is as authentic as possible. The focus is on depicting Roman military life and civilian life in the second half of the 1st century AD (during the reign of Emperor Vespasian).

The young and diverse group includes students of archaeology, restoration, education, the arts, and law, each of whom brings their own perspective on Roman history and its presentation. Since 2017, the association has been active in museums, schools, city tours, historical events, and film and television productions in Austria, Switzerland, and Germany. In addition, the group carries out its own projects, such as training camps, marches, and construction and reconstruction projects.
