Medzi ruinami a obnovou – rímske mesto v zrkadle povojnovej histórie Dolného Rakúska
The year 2025 marks the anniversary of significant events in the history of Lower Austria, which also play a central role in archaeological research and our cultural memory. Under the theme Remembering for the Future, we not only want to commemorate the past, but also emphasize its significance for the present and future. This year, we look back on formative turning points that have permanently changed the way history is understood and communicated - be it in the field of archaeological research, cultural identity or the museum presentation of historical knowledge.
The Roman town is therefore dedicating an online exhibition to the close links between the development of Carnuntum and the formative events of 1945, 1955, 1995 and 2005 - milestones that have had a decisive influence on the shape of the Roman town today. From the end of the war in 1945, to the merger of the excavations into an open-air museum in 1955, to the founding of the operating company in 1995, to setting the course for the international success of archaeological mediation from 2005 - all these stages are brought into focus.
Discover the history of research in Carnuntum
This online exhibition offers exclusive insights into previously little-known chapters of Carnuntum's research history, illuminates key turning points in archaeological development and documents the transformation from a scientific excavation site to an internationally recognized place of innovative museum work using numerous original sources, photographs and interview excerpts. The multimedia presentation invites visitors to explore the multi-layered history of the Roman city of Carnuntum beyond a physical visit and at the same time opens up new perspectives on the role of archaeological research in the cultural memory of Lower Austria. By reflecting on this history, we create a foundation that emphasizes both the value of the past and its relevance for the future.
