The Domus Quarta in the Roman Quarter

The only floor mosaic in Carnuntum at its original site has an impressive and fitting home, the partially reconstructed domus quarta (House IV). The scale of the constructed area and the mosaic are indicative of a luxuriously appointed residence. The room containing the mosaic may have served as a representative dining room during the warmer seasons of the year.

In order to be able to present the preserved mosaic floor, the mosaic was removed, restored and then embedded in a new substrate for durable protection. On completion of the restoration, the mosaic was relaid at its original site and now shines in colorful ancient splendor in the domus quarta.
