The most important writing material of antiquity is the origin of the word “paper,” and during Roman times, thousands upon thousands of sheets were used. In Carnuntum, children have the opportunity to paint their own papyrus bookmarks and take them home as souvenirs. 

Roman culture featured a wide variety of games, some of which, fortunately, we can still easily imagine today.

Orca Game

Particularly popular in the Roman army, Caesar’s legionnaires are known to have passed the time this way during the long siege of Alesia. The game involves turning a vessel (or a helmet) upside down and throwing nuts or small stones into it from a set distance.  

Round Mill

The Mola rotonda is a simple game for two players and is quite comparable to today’s Nine Men’s Morris. The playing field is a plate-sized wheel with eight spokes. Simplest version: Each player has three pieces; players take turns placing them and then moving them step by step. The winner is the player who places three pieces in a row (and across the center).

Dice Tower

The Turricula, a tower made of wood or metal, served as a pastime for the Romans and was used to prevent cheating in dice games. When dropped into the top, the dice fell through a series of barriers, inclined planes, and obstacles, swinging from side to side until it reached the opening at the bottom.

What was it like to be a Roman legionary? At this station, visitors of all ages can step into the shoes of a soldier. Equipped with a helmet, shield, sword, and armor, the world of the Roman army comes to life.

The countryside around Carnuntum has been rich in game since ancient times. Wild boar played an important role in the local cuisine as well. At this station, visitors can put their skills to the test—a playful nod to the hunting traditions familiar to the Romans and the Celtic inhabitants.

Ring toss and hobby horses invite everyone to join in and make for a lively start.

The ultimate test of strength! However, our menhirs aren't as heavy as the Celtic ones, so they're naturally great for kids, too!

The ancient world was shaped by stories and myths. At this station, legends selected with children in mind are told—including Aesop’s well-known fables, which continue to convey values and life lessons to this day.

We’ve got something for our youngest visitors, too: in the sandbox filled with river stones, they can explore, dig, and experiment—just like little archaeologists.

What was school like in Roman times? At the “Schola Romana,” children can experience firsthand how people learned in ancient times: by learning their first Latin words, doing arithmetic on an abacus, and writing on papyrus or wax tablets.

Patience and precision are key: just like real archaeologists, the participants piece the shards back together. Under expert guidance, a small puzzle of the past takes shape, piece by piece.

Mosaics adorned many Roman homes and remain a testament to exquisite craftsmanship to this day. At this station, you can design your own motifs—inspired by the colorful examples of antiquity.

Even the Romans loved ornate jewelry. Using wire and colorful glass beads, unique rings are created—a creative keepsake and a glimpse into the craftsmanship of days gone by.

Here, history becomes a culinary delight: freshly baked Roman bread made with olive oil, served with moretum—a savory mixture of sheep’s milk cheese, herbs, garlic, and oil. An authentic glimpse into Roman cuisine.

On special occasions, the people of Carnuntum would parade through the city in festive processions. This tradition comes to life during the Children’s Festival: accompanied by music and a festive atmosphere, the crowd moves through the Roman quarter.

The ancient theater thrived on expressive masks. Here, children can design and paint their own masks and take them home—a creative introduction to the world of Roman theater.

Beauty and personal care were also of great importance in ancient Rome. Children learn about the diverse scents and cosmetic traditions that were created using natural ingredients such as roses, lavender, and cedarwood.

A sweet treat from ancient times: small balls made of semolina and cottage cheese are fried in oil and drizzled with honey. A popular Roman dish that is still enjoyed today.

How were important decisions made in the Roman city? Taking on the role of a senator, participants will experience how collective decisions were reached—an exciting glimpse into the political life of Carnuntum.

Dogs are welcome at the children's festival. However, please note that they must be kept on a leash at all times and must wear a muzzle on the festival grounds.

Yes, the NÖ-Card is valid at the Children's Festival!

The children's festival aims to teach children about Roman history in a fun and understandable way. That's why admission is free for children under 6 accompanied by an adult. Children aged 6 to 18 pay €8 admission, adults pay €15 admission (reduced rate: €14). 

The game and craft stations are set up in the shade of the trees and tents whenever possible. The portico and the Roman houses also offer shelter from the sun. Water bottles can be refilled at any time at the drinking fountains located throughout the Roman Quarter.
