In the living room of the Romans: The life of rich and poor

On the first weekend in July (July 5 and 6), the residents of the Roman Quarter are once again inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the multi-layered world of antiquity. This time, the focus is on a central theme that had a profound impact on Roman society and remains relevant to this day: social inequality. Under the title The lives of rich and poor, the inhabitants of Carnuntum talk about their everyday lives and take visitors on a journey back in time to the ancient metropolis on the Danube Limes.

Where today restored houses, precious furnishings and fine wall paintings are reminiscent of a wealthy upper class, the lives of ordinary people often remain hidden. However, Carnuntum was not only a place of military and economic power, but also a reflection of a diverse society - with all its contrasts between wealth and poverty, splendor and deprivation. At the event The Life of Rich and Poor, visitors experience a very special combination of lively history education and archaeological research.

In addition to the regular guided tour program, the weekend offers insights into the everyday life of different social classes in an ancient city: the inhabitants of the reconstructed houses provide insights into very different lifestyles - from wealthy landlords to craftsmen and day labourers. In a lively way, they show what everyday life in Rome meant: What was on the table of the poor - and what was on the table of the rich? Which items were considered a luxury? And how did clothing, housing and burial differ according to social rank? The entire additional offer is included in the regular admission - there are no additional costs. Don't miss out on this unique experience and join us on a journey into the everyday spiritual world of the Roman Empire!

Please note: Experience has shown that guided tours on weekends sell out quickly. We therefore ask you to book them in advance. Admission can be purchased separately at the ticket office or in the webshop.
