To kick off the anniversary year, the new virtual reality room in the Roman city will open at the start of the season on March 14. In the “Carnuntum Experience,” visitors can experience Carnuntum in Roman times up close from completely new perspectives in a virtual flight. The journey through the centuries shows the transformation of the ancient metropolis from its heyday to the eventual decline of Carnuntum with impressive 3D visualizations. The ancient extent of the city, as well as districts previously buried underground, such as the military camp, the governor's palace, and the forum baths, are brought to life in spectacular images.

The ‘Carnuntum Experience’ with VR glasses can be enjoyed for an additional charge of €2 at the visitor centre in the Roman town.

The starting point and idea for the new VR experience was the EU campaign “Twin it!” for the 3D digitization of cultural assets. As part of the Europeana project, the Heidentor in Carnuntum was one of a few selected European cultural monuments to be converted into 3D visualizations. These “digital twins” are intended to preserve cultural heritage for future generations and make it visible. In this way, the Roman city of Carnuntum also wants to keep up with the times by creating attractive and tangible access to history through virtual offerings.
